Link Africa (Pty) Ltd has a vacancy for a Splicing Technician within the Operations Department in the KZN region.

Purpose of Job: To build and maintain a resilient and stable fibre network, in a cost-efficient way, ensure customer excellence and skill transference through knowledge sharing.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities (Key Performance Indicators and Tasks)

Link Build

  • Splice new customer up on network, as per splicing instructions (SI)
  • Build the link as per SI and obtain ref from planning dept. if there are any changes on SI
  • Return splicing instructions As Build and pack to Project Manager/Project Leader
Measurable

  • Build Links effectively as per SI, LA specification and quality standards
Restoration of Breaks (MTTR) and network availability

  • Fault find and restore breaks in the quickest time possible and within the set SLA agreement.
  • Maintain shortest timelines between temporary and permanent repairs: Use shortest time to get client to work (to meet SLA)
  • Maintain man holes and routes on a daily basis (cleaning, numbering, slack management, locks and lid replacement and labelling)
  • Identify weak spots and breaks in the network that are high risk:
    • Identify high traffic routes (check diversity)
    • Identify weak spots until it can be rectified, not allowing access
    • Commissioning man holes
Measurable

  • Restore all breaks in quickest time possible and within the set SLA. Availability of the network is at 99.98%.
Execute Pro-Active Maintenance

  • Identify circuits affected for cut over to make permanent repairs, based on client data and availability. (8 weeks)
  • Conduct site observation and decide on appropriate action where joints are not up to standard and ducts are damaged.
  • Manage protected weak spots until it can be rectified, not allowing access
  • Manage rectify / remedy cutting over cables and / or cutting in new joints
  • Perform tracing, planning and execute cut overs
  • Update As Builds / ATPs of changed links after cut overs

  • Pro-active maintenance executed as per As Build
OTDR Analysis

  • Accurately read and interpret test results of OTDR testing equipment.

  • Accurate OTDR testing and analysis
Health and Safety Compliance

  • Adheres to all the safety policies as defined by the EH&S act and the LA /H20 policies regarding Safety.

Regular inspection and maintenance of business tools 

  • Adherence to Fleet policy, SHEQ requirements, IT policy and all other applicable LA policies

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements/Competencies:

  • N3 Certificate or equivalent of Grade 12
  • 3 years’ technical experience in the Optical Fibre environment (Construction and Maintenance)
  • Must have a valid clean driver’s license with < 3 years driving experience
  • Knowledge of Environmental, Health and Safety Management regulations pertaining to fibre optic installations
  • Knowledge and understanding of ICT industry is essential
  • Knowledge of test equipment (OTDR) and Health and Safety is recommended
  • Problem solving individuals with a competitive nature will stand out above the peers
  • Registration as an FOA Splicer (5-day course) is highly recommended

Technical Skills

Computer Literacy Good working knowledge of MS Outlook and other applicable software.
Splicing Able to joint optical fibres end-to-end, using heat. Registration as an FOA Splicer (5-day course) is highly recommended
OTDR Analysis Good working knowledge of fault finding / testing equipment OTDR
Data Integrity Update applicable documentation to ensure accurate records are maintained
Technical Applications Remain conversant on technical applications used in the telecommunications field
